Abstract
Background : Carotid artery stenosis due to atherosclerosis may change the blood flow to the brain But it is not known whether carotid artery stenosis causes the cerebral infarction. We desinged this study to evaluate the incidence and clinical characteristics of carotid artery stenosis in patients with cerebral infarction in Korea by two-dimensional and color Doppler echocardiography.

Method : We used duplex sonography and color flow imaging of six sites of both carotid arteries and evaluated total 306 sites of carotid arteries for 51 patients with cerebral infarction comfirmed by brain computed tomography.

Results : 1) The incidence of carotid artery stenosis in 51 patients with cerebral infarction was 88.2% ( 45patients) regardless of the degree of stenosis.
2) The most frequent type of stenosis among 306sites was mild stenosis (68.0%0 of carotid artery, and the next were moderate stenosis (6.8%), severe stenosis (2.6%), and occlusion *1.0%) in order.
3) Peak velocity tends to increase with the severity of stenosis of carotid artery.
4) There was no difference in incidence of stenosis between right and left carotid arteries.
5) There was no correlation between the site of carotid artery stenosis and the site of cerebral infarction.
6) There was no correlation between the degree of carotid artery stenosis and the serum lipid profiles.

Conclusion : These results suggested that the incidence of carotid artery stenosis in Korean patients with cerebral infarction was considered as frequent as in western country even though there was no correlation proved between carotid artery stenosis and cerebral infarction Therefore further study of large number of patients should be performed to evaluate the role of carotid artery stenosis in cerebral infarction.
